Home > Where To Stay in Las Vegas: How To Choose the Right Vegas Hotel for You

Choosing the perfect hotel can make or break your Vegas vacation. What suits one traveler may be the wrong fit for another; it all depends on your personality and the type of getaway you’re planning. Are you dreaming of relaxation, adventure, or partying ‘til the sun comes up? The hotel you choose in Vegas can shape the whole vibe of your trip.

There is a vast range of hotel options in Las Vegas, and researching the perfect place to stay can be time-consuming. To make it easier for you, we’ve created this guide to choosing the right Vegas hotel for your needs.

What’s Your Budget?

Are you planning to splurge on your Vegas trip or keep things affordable? No matter what your answer is, Las Vegas has the right hotel for your budget. It’s quite possible to book a luxurious suite in this city for half the price of a tiny room in New York City, so even if you’re on a tight budget, your options are exciting.

Some Room Rates Are Too Good To Be True

When booking a room in Vegas, don’t get too carried away with saving money. If the price seems insanely cheap compared to other hotels (eg, $10 a night), the hotel is probably awful.

Hotels on the Strip Have Higher Rates

Staying on the Las Vegas Strip will always be more expensive than booking an off-Strip hotel, but it may be worth the higher cost because of the convenience of being near many famous sightseeing landmarks, attractions, and shows.

Beware of Resort Fees

Don’t get fooled by resort fees! These additional hotel fees are often hidden in the small print of a hotel booking and are collected at the time of check-in. Sometimes they’re more than the room rate. Take a look at our list of hotel resort fees and be sure to factor them into your budget. Alternatively, you may want to book a hotel with no resort fee.

Visit Vegas During Off-Peak Times

If you’re flexible on your dates, aim for a mid-week trip to Vegas – it’ll get you a cheaper room rate than on the weekends. Summertime (June through August) is traditionally the slow season for Vegas, so hotel rates are reduced. Avoid dates when big events or conventions are happening, and special events like New Year’s Eve.

What’s Your Ideal Location?

Consider whether you want to stay on the Strip, off-Strip, or in Downtown Las Vegas. Each location has its own benefits and appeal.

The Las Vegas Strip

Staying in the heart of the action on the Strip means you can easily explore by foot, and you won’t have to go far to get to most famous Las Vegas attractions. The Strip is a sensory overload of neon lights, loud casinos, and crowds of people, but that’s what makes it an exciting place to stay.

We recommend:

Off-Strip

If you prefer to be a little more removed and have a bit of peace and quiet, you may want to stay in an off-strip hotel. These hotels are often more geared towards families, with amenities like bowling alleys and movie theaters.

We recommend:

Downtown Las Vegas

Downtown Vegas is the quirky, retro part of Las Vegas where all the original buildings and casinos were built. Many hotels here have a uniquely vintage vibe, some of which are located right on the bustling Fremont Street Experience.

What Are Your Travel Goals?

Your accommodations should match your ideal Vegas vacation vibe. Different types of trips align with different hotels. If you’re looking forward to relaxation and luxury, consider a five-star hotel with a pool, a spa, and fine dining like Bellagio or Wynn Las Vegas.

If you are coming to Las Vegas to party, you’ll want to stay at a hotel with a nightclub, bars,  or pool parties – The Cosmopolitan and The Cromwell are good fits. If you’re traveling with your family, choose a hotel with kid-friendly features like Excalibur, Circus Circus, or Mandalay Bay.

What’s on Your Itinerary?

Choosing a Vegas hotel that’s close to the activities you’re planning on doing means you won’t need to spend much time and energy getting around. Take a look at a map of Las Vegas to gauge distances between hotels and the attractions that appeal to you.

Do you love shopping? Consider a hotel with a shopping complex attached, like Caesars Palace or Planet Hollywood. Looking forward to seeing some world-class shows? Look into hotels that stage major productions like MGM Grand or Luxor. If you’re a foodie, you’ll probably love staying at a hotel with lots of delicious dining options like The Cosmopolitan or Caesars Palace.

Read Reviews and Do Your Research

Don’t settle on a hotel without checking out its reviews on TripAdvisor or Google. Look at guest photos of the rooms to get a realistic idea of what they look like. You can also go on forums like Reddit, read blogs, and watch YouTube videos to get an inside look at the hotel you’re interested in.
